Early Orthodontic Treatment

Screening now can help save your child’s smile later. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that kids have an initial orthodontic screening as early 7-years-old to determine whether your child may need orthodontic treatment. Early Treatment, referred to as Phase 1, for children typically begins around age 8 or 9. The purpose of early treatment is to correct existing or developing bite problems and improve the growth of the jaw. Early treatment also creates room for permanent teeth, reducing the need for future extractions.

Teen Orthodontic Treatment

Phase 2 treatment typically begins after all of your child’s permanent teeth have emerged. It focuses on the final alignment of their teeth. Phase 2 treatment may include braces or clear aligners worn for a prescribed amount of time. This is the point you really see the benefits of your decision to seek Phase 1 treatment. Children who undergo Phase 1 orthodontic treatment typically wear their braces or aligners for a shorter amount of time compared to those who don’t. They also often avoid needing extractions and surgery.
