The Veneer Process: What to Expect When You Get Veneers
Serving Patients in Vancouver WA
If you’ve spent years hiding your smile because of a chipped tooth, stubborn stains, or gaps that just won’t quit, you’re not alone. Dental veneers might be the answer you’ve been looking for. The typical process of getting them includes a consultation, preparation, placement, and a post-evaluation.
Many of our patients at Lewis Family & Implant Dentistry come to us with the same concern: they want to smile with confidence again. But before you commit to any treatment, you deserve honest answers.
The Process of Getting Veneers: Step by Step
- Consultation: Every veneer process begins with a thorough examination. We’ll look at your teeth, discuss your goals, and may take X-rays or impressions as needed. This is where we have an honest conversation about whether veneers are the right choice for your specific situation.
- Preparation: We’ll remove a thin layer of enamel to create space for your new shells, then take precise impressions (or digital scans) that get sent to a lab where your custom veneers are crafted.
- Placement: With porcelain veneers, placement happens across two visits. During your first appointment after preparation, you’ll receive a temporary set of veneers to wear while your permanent ones are being made at the lab. At your second visit, we remove the temporaries and bond your custom porcelain veneers in place, making careful adjustments to ensure a perfect fit. With composite veneers, the entire sculpting, placement, shaping, and polishing happens in one visit.
- Evaluation & Follow-Up: We’ll check your bite carefully and have you review your smile to identify any final tweaks or adjustments as needed.
How Do Veneers Work?
With veneers, your dentist bonds a wafer-thin shell (usually about half a millimeter thick) to the cleaned and prepared front surface of your tooth. This shell replaces what everyone sees when you smile: the color, shape, length, and the surface texture.
The tooth underneath stays alive, keeping on doing its job of chewing. Nothing is extracted, and nothing moves. Dental veneers don’t strengthen a weak tooth or fix what’s happening underneath. They transform what the world sees when you smile.
What Can Veneers Improve?
Veneers tend to help most with cosmetic concerns that live on the front surface of your teeth.
They’re particularly effective for discoloration that resists whitening, especially deep intrinsic stains or tetracycline staining that developed during childhood. If you’ve tried whitening treatments without success, veneers can give you the bright smile that bleaching couldn’t achieve.
Chipped front teeth and worn edges from age or grinding are another common reason patients choose veneers. The same goes for small gaps and minor shape differences between adjacent teeth.
If your smile reads as uneven because two or three teeth sit slightly out of position, veneers can create visual harmony without the need for braces. Front teeth that look short or worn compared with the rest of your smile can also be restored to more pleasing proportions.
Often, the trigger is just one tooth. A single chip or one discolored incisor that you’ve lived with for years is finally enough to bring you in. In that case, one or two veneers may be all you need.
What Veneers Can’t Fix
- First, veneers do not move teeth. That’s what orthodontics is for.
- They do not repair cavities.
- They do not strengthen a structurally weak tooth.
A front tooth carrying a large old filling, a fracture, or a root canal usually needs a crown instead. Full coverage and structural support matter more in those situations than conserving enamel.
Alignment problems often belong to Invisalign or braces, since moving teeth can sometimes avoid removing any tooth structure at all.
Gum disease and decay must be addressed as well. Bonding porcelain over an inflamed gum line produces a result that looks wrong within months. Periodontal health always comes before cosmetics in our treatment sequence.
This is all why an exam always comes before the design conversation at our office.

- Sensitivity is common but temporary. For most people, this resolves quickly on its own.
- The commitment is permanent. This is why we discuss alternatives like bonding and whitening before recommending a full veneer case.
- Damage can happen. If a porcelain veneer breaks, it typically requires complete replacement. Composite veneers can often be repaired during a simple office visit.
- The tooth underneath can still develop problems. Poor oral hygiene can lead to cavities at the margins where the veneer meets your natural tooth, and gum disease can develop if you neglect your gum health.
- Color matching can be tricky. Staining beverages, aging, and other factors can shift the shade of your natural teeth, potentially creating a mismatch down the road.
What to Avoid When Preparing for Your Veneer Procedure
- Don’t skip food entirely, have a light meal.
- Don’t use whitening strips or trays.
- Don’t forget to mention any medications you’re taking.
- Don’t hesitate to ask questions about anything that concerns you.
What Not to Do With Veneers Afterward
- Don’t bite directly into hard foods like ice, hard candy, or whole raw carrots. Cut them into smaller pieces and chew with your back teeth.
- Never use your teeth as tools. Opening packages, tearing tape, or biting your nails can chip or crack veneers.
- Avoid chewing on non-food items like pens or pencils. And if you grind your teeth at night, a night guard is essential.
- Be mindful of staining beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine for composite veneers specifically.
